PORTO, TECONVI and PSI INAUGURATE UNIQUE EQUIPMENT IN BRAZIL
The event will be joined by businessmen, local authorities, representatives from The Federal Revenue Service, foreign diplomats and the press.
The world¹s leading technology for X-ray scanning of seagoing cargo containers will be installed in the port of Itajai on Monday, January 23rd. The Thscan mobile unit, a container cargo scanning system manufactured by Nuctech Company Limited, China¹s premier provider of X-ray scanning systems, will be officially commissioned for service in Brazil.
The procurement of the scanner was initiated by Teconvi, the port operator of Itajai, and the equipment is the first of its kind in Brazil. This marks the completion of the initial phase of the partnership between Teconvi and PSI do Brazil, a subsidiary of Port Security International, a U.S. company. It is believed that the use of X-ray scanners will improve the efficiency of port operations by dramatically reducing inspection time and increasing the certainty of seagoing container contents.
The commissioning ceremony and scanner demonstration will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Area B do Teconvi, downtown. Teconvi and PSI do Brazil welcome local authorities, businessmen and special guests including the governor of Santa Catarina Luiz Henrique da Silveira, and Chinese Ambassador, Jiang Yuande who will partake in the ceremony and witness the demonstration of the scanner operations. The superintendent of Teconvi, Claudio Fernando Daudt, stated ³The ability to use technology such as this allows us to improve the efficiency of the port by reducing inspection intervals from days to minutes. Teconvi has been investing in systems that enhance our cargo handling ability with the objective of faster processing time for imports and exports. This scanner meets our criteria and is another step in the journey to move Itajai from its current level of efficiency to an international port to be emulated by others. The port of Itajai intends to meet and exceed the world standards defined by the Federal Revenue Service of Brazil.²
Port Security International (³PSI²), which has its head office in Washington, D.C. is committed to bring the standards of the US Government, through the DHS (Department Homeland Security), to deal with the implementation of security for the ports in South America. PSI¹s vice president, and president of the Brazilian subsidiary, Alvaro Pinto, says ³Efficiency and security are desired benefits delivered by our system. It is an excellent tool to thwart smuggling and eliminate contraband while preventing terrorist acts before damage or disaster occurs. The scanner is capable of identifying bombs or nuclear devices hidden within the seagoing containers. X-ray technology will also aid in administering the tax requirements in a fair and balanced manner.²
